From Victim To Victor.

A journey of Survival and Advocacy

Brittany Joy Figlar, born May 21, 1990, in Elyria, Ohio, has overcome immense adversity to become a voice for survivors of abuse and exploitation. Her early life was shaped by a strict and abusive upbringing, coupled with significant familial discord. At the age of 12, Brittany became a victim of sexual assault by a trusted family member, a crime for which the perpetrator later pled guilty. Despite her bravery in seeking justice, she faced bullying and disbelief from her peers, further isolating her during a critical developmental period.

In her teens, Brittany faced homelessness after coming out as gay and became vulnerable to further exploitation, including coerced relationships and financial manipulation. She endured years of abuse and was eventually drawn into cycles of human trafficking and forced substance dependency. These experiences were exacerbated by systemic failures that overlooked the trauma she endured and criminalized her survival mechanisms.

Through courage and determination, Brittany ultimately escaped her trafficker and sought help. Her journey toward recovery included connecting with advocates and law enforcement who recognized her victimization and supported her rehabilitation. Brittany completed a faith-based recovery program, which became instrumental in her personal and spiritual healing.

Now a survivor advocate, Brittany has dedicated her life to raising awareness about human trafficking and supporting other survivors. She has worked with law enforcement, healthcare providers, and community organizations to train professionals on recognizing and addressing trafficking. Her efforts have also contributed to survivor-centered initiatives, including peer support programs designed to aid others in their recovery journey.

Brittany went on to testify against her trafficker in court which led to a sentence of 172 years to life in Lorain County, Ohio, which is the longest sentence for human trafficking in the state’s history.

Brittany’s story highlights the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of addressing systemic gaps to support survivors of abuse and exploitation. Her advocacy continues to inspire change and provide hope to those seeking to rebuild their lives.
